Couples psychotherapy (also referred to as marriage counseling or relationship therapy) is a form of psychotherapy in which both partners in a committed relationship participate together in joint sessions with a licensed mental health professional. The goal is to identify and address relational challenges, improve communication, resolve conflicts, and enhance emotional intimacy and mutual understanding.
This modality focuses on the relationship as the client, while also attending to individual dynamics that contribute to relational patterns. Sessions are structured to promote insight into interactional cycles, clarify emotional needs and unmet expectations, and foster healthier relational functioning.
Common clinical goals may include:
Improving communication skills and conflict resolution strategies
Enhancing emotional connection and intimacy
Addressing issues related to trust, infidelity, parenting, financial stress, or life transitions
Increasing empathy, validation, and mutual support
Managing the impact of individual mental health issues on the relationship
Exploring and shifting maladaptive relational patterns
Sessions typically last 50–60 minutes and are scheduled weekly or biweekly, depending on clinical need. The therapist maintains neutrality and provides a structured, confidential space where both partners are encouraged to participate equally. Treatment plans are developed collaboratively and may involve homework assignments or skills practice outside of sessions.
